“Transitions” started out as an exercise in writing for strings when I was studying at the Australian Film, TV and Radio School back in 2010. Seeing its potential for a performance in the foreground on a stage; as opposed to in the background of a film soundtrack, inspired me to revise this piece several years later.
Effectively, “Transitions” lives up to its name - what was once meant to function as music for a soundtrack has now transitioned in to a concert piece for String Orchestra. Both its structure and harmonic language were very different then to what it is now.
This work is also an attractive companion piece to “Waldeinsamkeit” if you happen to be programming an “all strings” concert.
