New York City is one my favourite cities in the world to visit. Why? Its pace is quick, its energy is electric, but it's also the amazing New Yorkers who make me feel like I'm part of the city from the moment I arrive.
It may well be the city that never sleeps, but I always enjoy going for a walk through Times Square and Central Park in the morning (coffee and bagel in hand), and watch the city wake up before I attempt to soak up as many Broadway musicals as is humanly possible.
Through this short piece, I hope your audience imagines the squirrels fidgeting around in Central Park. I hope they hear the symphony of city traffic make a music all of its own, and that they absolutely smell the roasting of chestnuts on an open sidewalk.
This piece invites a brief moment of improvisation from the Alto Sax player if desired, and is suitable as an encore, a light concert feature, or as a background filler.
First performed by the Saxophone Quartet of the Australian Army Band Sydney in 2009, "Morning Walk in Manhattan" recently enjoyed a studio recording by the Argentinian Saxophonist, Patrcio Böttcher in 2020.
