The character of “Matilda” was created by book writer Rob Martin, and features in the original Australian musical, “Pioneers,” for which Greg contributed the original music and lyrics. In the show, Matilda functions as the “it” girl, and enjoys some comic moments as most secondary characters tend to do in musical theatre.
Performances of tango music in the early days when Australia was first settled (the time period in which “Pioneers” is set) would have been few and far between. However, using the tango as a theatrical device in the show enabled the writers to bring different characters together, and proved to be quite effective when it was workshopped for the stage back in 2006.
Beyond careful attention to articulation and balance, let the music and your imagination tell the story of a diverse cohort of colourful characters coming together. Some of their conflicts will be resolved, some new conflicts will be created - all in an equal balance of comedy and drama.
