Over the centuries, the wonder of nature has inspired many composers to write pieces in response to the landscape around them. For me, I’m fascinated at how the light changes the mood of the environment at the beginning, and end of every day. It’s that magical time just before sunset, and just before sunrise.
This piece aims to capture the atmosphere of the Earth somewhere in between dawn and sunrise.
“Between Dawn and Sunrise” presents opportunities for expressive, lyrical playing within the Flute’s middle register, and some moments of delicate interplay between the Flute and the right hand of the Piano. The brightness of G major as the tonic key helps to set up the overall progression from start to finish (dark to light), as the piece heads towards daybreak in the final few bars.
